The collection contains a printed circular with attached conjugate leaf. Signed by Henry L. Ellsworth, it announces the partnership of John Curtis and Edward A. Ellsworth in Lafayette, Ind., to act as a land and loan agency in the Wabash and Maumee Valley. The second page is a letter from Curtis and Ellsworth to Swepson Whitehead of Norfolk, Va., enclosing land certificates.

Henry Leavitt Ellsworth graduated from Yale in 1810. He studied law at Litchfield Law School, and in 1832 he was appointed Commissioner of Indian tribes in Arkansas and Oklahoma. In 1835, Ellsworth was elected mayor of Hartford, Connecticut, but only served one month. In 1835, he was appointed U.S. Commissioner of Patents, remaining until 1845.
